THE CHARACTER
Character Name: Jean (Jehan) Prouvaire Series: Les Misérables Canon Point: Posthumously Character Age: 19 Background: A wiki link can be found here, his introduction in Hugo's text can be found here, and his death is here
Personality: Jean Prouvaire is, in a word, a Romantic. He refers to himself as Jehan, based on a momentary fancy from some romantic notion drawn from his studies of the Middle Ages. He's a little Bohemian, in the sense that he believes in the ideals of freedom, beauty, truth, and love. Above all, he believes in love. One might say he's addicted to it, in fact. He falls easily in love and pines away from afar, writing poems to his beloved that he never shows them. He never acts on his love, because that would only ruin the picture of idealistic love he's built up in his mind. He does, however, speak to his friends of his loves, reads them his bad poetry, and they are kind enough to indulge him.
There is one love that Jehan has that isn't fleeting, however. And that is the love of Enjolras. Jehan has a deep and undying admiration for his friend, and respects him utterly. He hangs upon his every word, though his mind sometimes wanders during meetings as he doodles in his journal. He admires Enjolras's passion, and is loyal to both he and their band of friends almost more than he is loyal to their cause. Which isn't to say that he finds Enjolras flawless. He does wish that his friend were more kind and compassionate, at times. Or at the very least, would relax a little. But he knows this is an impossible goal, and so he doesn't press the matter.
Jehan plays the flute, and has a few plants that he tends to. He enjoys nature as a whole, and often spends more time looking at the clouds than he does than he does reading the newspaper. He especially loves pretty little flowers, and always puts aside a bit of money to get a little flower for his windowsill. He enjoys poetry, especially the grand, romantic poets, and reads aloud to his flowers. He speaks Italian, Latin, Greek, and Hebrew, only to read what he considers to be classical poetry.
He speaks gently, bows his head and hides behind his long blond curls, casts his eyes down, smiles when he's embarrassed and blushes at the drop of the hat, dresses in colours that he thinks look quite splendid together, but often are rather blinding, is a little quiet and awkward, and extremely friendly.
When necessary, however, he can be a force to be reckoned with. He does everything with passion; he loves fiercely, argues heatedly, and is willing to fight tooth and nail to uphold his beliefs and those of his friends. And as dearly as he loves his friends, so too do they love him. When Jehan is found missing during the revolution, they plan on trading a valuable prisoner for him, a spy from the opposing side. When they that Jehan was shot, the spy was informed that his allies might as well have shot him, too.
Powers/Abilities: Jehan's one great power in life is the ability to make his friends smile. Even if they are in the most dour of moods, Jehan will give them a hug and present them with one of his sunshine smiles, and it is nearly impossible not to smile back.
